Plunge Into the Trench

May 16, 2025

Plunge Into the Trench is a project based on a previous ideation model of a frilled shark that I had started prior to hearing about the 2025 Themed Attraction Showcase. From there I had come up with a storyboard concept and rough synopsis of the sort of ride I had wanted to build. Through further research into dark rides and the mechanics behind them, I wanted to design a ride that could potentially be built, or even simply used as a concept to a concept ride.

I decided on a long single floor rail, it's to be slightly blended in with the overall floor track, sudden jerks and speed changes will be controlled through architectural sensors as well as break and barrier timings.

The vehicle riders will be in has been modeled to replicate a Deep Sea Angler Fish, holding approximately riders, 2 rows with 3 riders each. Seats are omni-directional and moving with individual lap bars. Cutouts on the left and right sides of the cart and an immersive sound system will also be implemented. The esca (light bulb) of the fish would be one of the main light sources for the ride.

Other lighting utilizes the main multi-level cylindrical screen projection, mini sea rocks, bubbles, and sea plants will also let off a non-distracting, but intriguing glow.

While there's a sound system located in the base and ceiling of the cart, metallic and bubbling sounds will also be played throughout the ride. A deeper hum and backtrack can be heard in the background of the music, this hum will gradually increase until it's noticeable for the riders. Sound system also further added to larger architectural models, which include sensors to detect when carts get closer in range to these models.

Approximately 25-30 animatronics would be utilized and specifically designed for this ride, ranging from larger scale creatures like the Byrdes Whale to mini scale creatures like the sea spider. Preferably these models would be simple in shape, but include eye-catching paint jobs.

Additional aspects for this ride would include fog machines, water spritzes, and air fresheners that smelled of sea salt and beach themes.

*Frilled Shark, Byrdes Whale, Dumbo Octopus, Ping Pong Tree Sponge, Coral, Rocks, and Overall Environment were modeled and designed by myself.

All other models were acquired elsewhere, as well as textures and audio.

**Every element acquired elsewhere was then adjusted and simply used as a base model to fit this concept accordingly.

Environment and concept designed entirely in Blender 4.2.3, rendered using Cycles

Models acquired from Turbosquid and SketchfabEdited using Adobe After Effects, Red Giant, and Cinema4D

Audio from freesound.org and ProSound Effects
